An annual seminar 2005 of CTP-KT was held on November 15 2005 at CETP project site. This seminar was aimed to share the project activities with project partners.  This seminar was also aimed to brief the linkage between “CETP and CTP-KT” to the project constituency. 

Total 59 participants including owners & staff members of tanneries and respectable members of PTA (SZ) ES attended this seminar. Two Deputy Director Mr.Irfan Ullah Tunio and Mr.Naeem Ahmad Mughal of Sind Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) also attended this seminar.

The seminar was started with the recitation of Holy Quran by Mr. Mehfooz Ali EMR/Incharge of Zahoor Sanchoo Pvt. Ltd. After the recitation of Holy Quran a welcome speech was delivered by Mr. Eijaz Ahsan, Project Manager CETP.  Mr. Ahsan described the aim to organize the seminar to the. He stated that this seminar is aimed to share the current status of the CETP with the project constituency.

After the welcome address, Mr. Izhar Ul Haque, Project Coordinator of CTP-KT briefed the current position of CETP and services which are provided by CTP-KT team to the project partners. Mr. Haque stated that CETP will be operational in the year 2006 and said that only those tanneries would be allowed to avail the facility to treat the effluent of their tannery which are attached with the CTP-KT project. He requested to those tanneries which are not attached with CTP-KT to establish liaison with PTA (SZ) ES for being the member of CETP so they would be able facilitated by CETP. During his address, Mr. Haque also shared that lots of foreign delegations has visited CETP and they have appreciated the efforts of CTP-KT and CETP team for being technically sound in modern technologies.  He highlighted the benefits of CP options and said that water consumption, chemical consumption and production cost can be curtailed in tanneries by the CP implementation.

After the address of Mr. Izhar Ul Haque, the chief guest of seminar Mr. Gulzar Firoz, President of PTA ES (SZ) was requested to address the participants. Mr. Firoz appreciated all the participants for being cooperative and progressive and gave a warm welcome to the participant. Mr. Firoz shared the historic background of CETP with the participants. He said that CETP was started keeping the pressure of international buyers in view. He said international buyers demand the production process according to the set international environmental standards, therefore PTA (SZ) ES initiated its Environmental Management Program with the aim to facilitate its member units in shape of providing the free of cost consultancy for pollution reduction with in tanneries or at source.

He said, it was also realized by PTA (SZ) that independent WWTP for every tannery will not be feasible. Therefore after having consensus in members of PTA SZ it was decided that a CETP will be best solution for tanneries of Korangi with the financial support from its members. He requested to PTA (SZ) ES members to release the dues. Mr. Firoz advised to PTA (SZ) ES members for participating in the CETP and CTP-KT project.        

After the speech of Mr. Gulzar Firoz, Mr. Ehsan Elahi-General Secretary PTA (SZ) ES was requested to address the participants. He discussed the current status of dues and installments for CETP. He shared that there are few tanneries which could not have released their dues they may clear their dues till June 30, 2006.  He said that those tanneries that will not pay their dues, would not be entertained by PTA (SZ) ES to avail the benefit of CETP.  He shared that due to delay in installments from tanneries, pace of work on conveyance system and dilution line has been slowdown, therefore he requested again to the tannery owners for being cooperative with CETP and CTP-KT team. In the end Mr. Elahi gave the vote of thanks and ended the seminar with the prayer. At last the refreshment was served to the participants.
