Solid Waste Management

Solid waste being generated from the Korangi tannery cluster is about 117 tons/day on an average basis. It contains dusted salt, raw trimmings, fleshing, wet blue trimmings, shavings and buffing dust etc.

At present the waste is thrown in the waste bins constructed at the various locations in Sector 7-A. PTA manages a system comprising of tractors and trolleys to dispose the waste from bins to a near by dumping site. The existing system does not address segregation of wastes at sources, proper transportation, reuse/recycling issues and safe disposal. In order to improve the condition a comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) is required.

Thus, scope of SWMP is defined as the designing of an efficient system for management of solid waste in an individual unit and also at the cluster level.  The program will be focused on:

-       To evaluate the existing practices for waste collection and to develop more effective
alternate options to reuse and/or final disposal of solid waste taking into account for
technical, environmental, organizational and financial aspects.

-        To assess the current situation and the environmental impact of the different options.

-        To establish the requirements of environmental protection for the disposal of solid waste.

-        To establish the design criteria of the different options.

-        Design the recommended option including organizational aspects of solid waste collection,
       reuse and disposal system.

Goals
The overall objective of the solid waste management program is to minimize the adverse environmental affects caused by the indiscriminate disposal of solid wastes, especially of the hazardous wastes.

Activities
Following activities will be executed to establish a proper SWMP:

-        Assessment of the existing situation of solid waste generation and the current disposal
       system

-        A quantitative and qualitative analyses of the solid waste

-        The design of the system for segregation of the solid waste within the tanneries

-        Feasibility for the collection, transportation and disposal facilities for solid wastes

-        Identification and selection of suitable dumping sites

-        Identification and selection of suitable machinery and equipment for collection and
       disposal

-        Review of different technologies for re-use and then selection of appropriate technology

-        Preparation of financial feasibility for reuse options

-        Preparation of implementation strategy

-        Initiation of Implementation.

Outputs
The planned outputs are defined below:

-        Data Review and Update

-        Development and approval of detailed Solid Waste Management Program

-        Detailed Designs for two feasible reuse options

-        Training of 30 staff members of solid waste management team

-        Initiation of Solid waste Management Program.
