Cleaner Technology Program for Korangi Tanneries |
|
Environmental pollution caused by tanneries is well
known environmental problem in Pakistan. Pakistan
Tanners Association (SZ) Environmental Society
realized the importance of the issue, and initiated a
comprehensive Environmental Management Program (EMP)
in 1994. The program is comprised of two major
components i.e. implementation of Combined Effluent
Treatment Plant (CETP) in Phase-I, and implementation
of Cleaner Technologies (CT) in Phase-II.
Implementation of CETP will be completed buy the end
of year 2003. |
|
 |
Subsequently, PTA decided to
start the implementation of Cleaner Technology component under the title of
“Cleaner Technology Program for Korangi Tanneries (CTP-KT)”. The aim of this
program is to enable Korangi Tanneries to implement cleaner technologies and
adopt better working practices for better environmental performance.
The approach of the program is to implement proposed environmental solutions in
a logical sequence under a cost effective framework with direct and indirect
financial paybacks.
The main objective of CTP-KT is to enable the Korangi tanneries, for the
compliance of National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) and EMS
Certification. the main components of CTP-KT are:
- Awareness Campaigns
- Cleaner Technology Implementation
- Solid Waste Management Program
- EMS Implementation
- Training on Tannery Wastewater Treatment
Under the project component awareness campaigns various activities are executed
which include posters, leaflets, banners, documentary video films and training
workshops/seminars.
through these activities environmental solutions are promoted among the mass of
tanneries. in the continuation of this a workshop was organized on December 16,
2006. detail of this workshop is presented in following section.
Objective of the workshop
The main objective of this workshop was to transfer the knowledge on the subject
workshop and create a mass of skilled and qualified tanners in the country. To
achieve the objective of this workshop presentations were given on the following
subjects:
1. Chrome Recovery and Recycling.
2. Use of Dusted Salt.

Description
A workshop titled “Chrome Recovery/Recycling and Reuse
of Dusted Salt” was organized on December 16, 2006 at
National Institute of Leather Technology (NILT). This
workshop was organized for the production staff of
tanneries. This workshop was also organized for
trainee tanners, who are studying in NILT. This
workshop was organized keeping in view the interest
level of trainee tanners and production staff of
tannery on the said subject.
-
The workshop was consisted of two sessions i.e.
presentation and practical demonstration. 1st part of
workshop was consist of presentation and the 2nd
session was comprised of practical demonstration.
-
Before the formal starting of workshop,
participants were registered at the reception desk and
presented a file having handouts of presentation,
writing papers, pen , leaflets on cleaner production
option, water conservation, environmental laws and
session plan.
-
The workshop was started with recitation of Holy
Quran. After the recitation, the formal introduction
was given to the participants by Mr. Ayaz Ahsan. Mr.
Ahsan welcomed the participants for being cooperative
with the project team and to exhibit their interest
towards initiatives taken for the environmental
betterment.
-
First presentation of workshop was delivered on
subject of “Chrome Recovery/ Recycling” by Mr. Ayaz
Ahsan, Leather Technologist of Cleaner Technology
Program for Korangi Tanneries (CTP-KT). In his
presentation, Mr. Ayaz Ahsan, briefed about the
benefits of recovered chrome. He said a large quantity
of chrome is used in leather processing. It has been
proved by the experiments that 70-80% chrome is
absorbed in skin and hides while chroming process and
the rest 20-30% chrome remains in water which is
usually drained out and wasted. To utilize this
quantity chrome recovery plant may be installed and
this 20-30% chrome may be recovered with the help of
it and a big cost can be conserve. The recovered
chrome may be reused after adding the rest 70-80%
quantity of chrome in the chroming process of next lot
of skins or hide.
-
During this presentation Mr. Ahsan shared that it
has been proved by the experiments that the softness,
color, shining, texture, quality surface, smoothness
and beauty are not affected by the use of recovered
chrome. He said that the results of recovered and
fresh chrome are same in nature and quality. Beside
it, this practice also helps to minimize the
environmental pollution.
-
At the end of this presentation, some important
questions were raised from the participants. The
questions were addressed by Mr. Ayaz Ahsan. The
participants were observed satisfied after getting the
explanation of their ambiguities from Mr. Ayaz Ahsan.
-
After the presentation on the subject of “Chrome
Recovery and Recycling” second presentation of
workshop was delivered on the subject of “Use of
Dusted Salt”
-
Presentation on the subject of “Use of Dusted Salt”
was given by Mr. Furqan Hameed, Leather Technologist,
CTP-KT.
-
Mr. Furqan briefed that salt can be remove from the
wet skins /hides and can be reused in pickling process
after clarification. He briefed about the procedure of
clarification.
-
It was learnt form Mr. Furqan that following
equipment can be use for dusting of salt from the
skins/hides:
Mechanical desalting drum
Dodeca wooden frame
Desalting machine
-
Mr. Furqan Stated about the benefits of use of
dusted salt. he said that production cost can be
curtail by using the dusted salt. Beside this,
quantity of TDS and spent soak liquor is also reduced
in the generated wastewater.
-
After this presentation questions were raised from
the participants which were addressed by Mr. Furqan.
These questions are presented in Annexure-F.
-
After this presentation a break of one hour was
given to the participants for lunch and prayer.
-
2nd session of workshop was started at 1400 hrs.
In this session a practical demonstration of chrome
recovery and reuse and use of dusted salt was shown to
the participants. Participants were observed their
selves enjoying in demonstration session.
-
After the demonstration discussions were made on
the procedures. In the end feedback was obtained from
the participants. Out of 32, feedback was received
from total 17 (53%) participants. An analysis of
feedback is presented in Table-2.
