Cleaner Technology Program for Korangi Tanneries

Environmental pollution caused by tanneries is a well known environmental problem in Pakistan. Pakistan Tanners Association (SZ) Environmental Society realized the importance of the issue, and initiated a comprehensive Environmental Management Program (EMP) in 1994. The program is comprised of two major components i.e. implementation of Combined Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) in Phase-I, and implementation of Cleaner Technologies (CT) in Phase-II. Implementation of CETP will be completed buy the end of year 2003.

Subsequently, PTA decided to start the implementation of Cleaner Technology component under the title of “Cleaner Technology Program for Korangi Tanneries (CTP-KT)”. The aim of this program is to enable Korangi Tanneries to implement cleaner technologies and adopt better working practices for better environmental performance.

The approach of the program is to implement proposed environmental solutions in a logical sequence under a cost effective framework with direct and indirect financial paybacks.

The main objective of CTP-KT is to enable the Korangi tanneries, for the compliance of National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) and EMS Certification. The main components of CTP-KT are:

- Awareness Campaigns
- Cleaner Technology Implementation
- Solid Waste Management Program
- EMS Implementation
- Training on Tannery Wastewater Treatment

Under the project component awareness campaigns various activities are executed which include posters, leaflets, banners, documentary video film and training workshops/seminars.
Through these activities environmental solutions are promoted among the mass of tanneries. In the continuation of this a workshop, titled “Use of Environment Friendly Chemicals” was organized on April 26, 2007. Detail of this workshop is presented in following section
.

Objective of the workshop
The main objective of this workshop was to disseminate the information among the tannery production staff regarding the available environmental friendly chemicals in market and benefits that can be achieved by the use of environmental friendly chemicals. In this regard CTP-KT team contacted to some major companies i.e. BASF, Clariant, Shafi Reso-chem and Novazymes. These companies are well known in chemical supplies market. Out of these four, two companies Novazymes and Shafi Reso-chem could synchronize the time with CTP-KT and deliver presentation on environmental friendly chemicals in the said workshop. An introductory presentation was also delivered by Mr. Furqan Hameed of CTP-KT.

There were two (02) supervisors, three (03) laboratory incharge and two (02) engineers too. % of categories of participants is depicted in Figure-1.

Description
A workshop titled “Use of Environmental Friendly Chemicals” was organized on April 26, 2007 at National Institute of Leather Technology (NILT). This workshop was organized for the personnel attached with leather production process.

  1. The workshop was spread over 3 hours duration.

  2. Before the formal starting of workshop, participants were registered at the reception desk and presented a file having handouts of presentation, writing papers, pen and a session plan.

  3. The workshop was formally started with the recitation of Holy Quran at 2: Pm by Mr. Nasar Usmani. After the recitation, introduction of workshop was given to the participants by Mr. Furqan Hameed. Mr. Hameed welcomed the participants and thanked for being cooperative with the project team throughout the project.

  4. After welcome note, Mr. Hmaeed delivered a presentation in which he highlighted the importance of environmental friendly chemicals use in leather processing. Mr. Hameed discussed the environmental problems created by the use of chemicals used in tanning. He also enlighten the economic benefits of environmental friendly chemicals.

  5. While describing the benefits of environmental friendly chemicals, Mr. Hameed said that it is cost effective to control pollution at source as compare to end of pipe treatment. He said environmental pollution effect the marine life and contributes in air pollution. The introductory session was started at 2:05 Pm and ended at 2:30 Pm.

  6. After the introduction first presentation of workshop was delivered by Abdul Rauf of Shafi Reso-chem. This presentation was started at 2:30 Pm.

  7. Initially, Mr. Rauf presented a brief introduction of his company. Later he discussed about the general environmental condition which are affected by the industrial effluent. He stated that industrial pollution contains Heavy metals, strong acids, alkalies and sulfur. Further he stated that industrial effluent may be make free from these things by using the environmental friendly chemicals.

  8. During the presentation Mr. Rauf stated that “Controlled Process is more environment friendly approach”. By Control Process he meant that pH should be maintained and chemicals should be used as per the process requirement. This is cost effective and environmental friendly as well.

  9. Mr. Rauf introduced environmental friendly chemicals which are prepared by Shafi Reso-chem. He said that these chemicals are environmental friendly and biodegradable. He said that we can make chromium free leather and reduce pollution load.

  10. In a response of a question, which was asked regarding the authenticity of biodegradability of chemicals produced by Shafi Rese-chem, he stated that we always attach MSDS with our products. He said we prepare organic based chemicals which are easily biodegradable.

  11. His presentation and discussion was ended at 3:30 Pm.

  12. After the first presentation, second presentation was started at 3:30 by Mr. Arshad Ghazi of Novazyme.

  13. In starting of his presentation Mr. Arshad appreciated the efforts of CTP-KT for being progressively work for pollution abatement generated by tanneries.

  14. After the opening remarks Mr. Arshad presented a brief introduction of his company and later he explained about the chemicals which are prepared by Novazyme. He stated that we deal in detergents, leather, textile and food industry.

  15. He shared that Novazyme produces enzyme for soaking, liming degreasing bating and acid bating which is 100% natural and environmental friendly.

  16. Mr. Arshad shared the properties of environmental friendly chemicals. He stated that environmental friendly chemicals are biodegradable, ozone safe ozone friendly, recyclable and reusable and cost effective. He stated that use of environmental friendly chemicals is an approach which leads towards pollution prevention. This approach may be called a cleaner technology approach. He stated that we produce halal products by using pancreatic enzymes whereas I all over the world enzymes are obtained from pigs.

  17. Mr. Arshad presented some recommendation for tanning process while delivering his presentation.

  18. After his presentation QA session was started at 4:30 Pm which was continued till 5:00 Pm. Questions were raised by the participants, which were addressed by Mr. Arshad. In the end of presentation Mr. Arshad shared with the participants that Novazyme has its own laboratory which is situated in Korangi sector 7-A.. This presentation was end at 4:30 Pm.

  19. After the QA session, Mr. Nasar Usmani thanked to the presenters and participants. Mr. Nasar Usmani requested to all the participants to fill up the feedback form. Out of 51 participants, feedback was received from 65% (33) participants. Feedback analysis is presented in Table-1.
