A workshop on the "Benefits of
Cleaner Production Options" was organized for the "Chief
Executives" of tanneries connected to " Environmental
Management Program" of PTA (SZ) ES on September 10,2003 at
Carlton hotel Alhamra I. Mr. Izhar Ul Haque Project
Coordinator, Cleaner Technology Program for Korangi
Tanneries, facilitate the workshop.
Mr. Izhar Ul Haque shared the objective of the workshop
with the participants. The objective of the workshop is
presented below.

Objective
The objective to organize this workshop was: -
1. To provide better understanding regarding the "Cleaner
Production Options".
2. To share the success stories of Punjab tanneries which
have already implemented Cleaner
Production Options and
achieving number of financial benefits.
The workshop started with the recitation of Sora-e- Ikhlas.
Mr.Gulzar Firoz, President PTA (SZ) Environmental Society
gave the welcome speech. He appreciate the participants in
his welcome address, to be progressive for taking
initiatives to solve the environmental problems of leather
sector, and appreciated the tanners for their contribution
in the CETP (Combine Effluent Treatment Plant).
Mr. Gulzar Firoz(Chairman of PTA (SZ) ES) emphasized to
adopt the "Cleaner Production Options" in the tanneries
and highlighted the benefits of the same. Mr. Firoz
appreciated the participants to attend this workshop and
requested them to insist the other colleagues of their
sector to attend the same.
Mr. Firoz informed the participants that Sindh
Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has started taking
actions against those industries, which are contributing
in the environmental pollution, and not attending this
issue seriously nor complying the legislative
requirements. In this regard PTA (SZ) ES had have number
of sessions with SEPA to assured that tanning industries
are seriously making their efforts for the pollution
abatement through various projects.
 
He said CETP and CTP-KT are the projects through which
connected tanneries with Environmental Management Program
(EMP) of PTA (SZ) ES are acquiring number of financial &
environmental benefits. The tanneries, which are not the
part of EMP, may contribute in CETP and become the part of
it and may also achieve the same benefits, which the
connected tanneries are availing the doors are open for
them.
Mr. Firoz shared about the project activities with the
participants and said that these activities are specially
planned for the tanning industries therefore they should
avail the opportunity.
After the welcome address, Mr. Rashid Ahmed, senior
leather technologist for CTP-KT, made a presentation on
the "Description of Cleaner Production Options". He
elaborated the financial & technical benefits of CP
Options and implementation mechanism of the same to all
the participants.
After the presentation a question answer session was held
for the participants for the further clarification
regarding given presentation.
Before starting the second presentation Mr. Izhar Ul Haque
informed the participants that CTP-KT has organized a 15
days training workshop on CP Option in collaboration with
British Leather Centre (BLC) in the month of October 2003
at National Institute of Leather Technology (NILT). He
said interested tanneries may register to attend this
workshop. This workshop may also be organized (on the
request) in individual units as well.
Mr. Izhar Ul Haque also announced that a board to place at
the front of tanneries would be presented to the connected
tanneries with the EMP of PTA (SZ) ES. This board would be
a certificate for the tanneries that these are connected
to EMP of PTA (SZ) ES.
The above mentioned board would help the tanneries against
the SEPA actions.
After this announcement, second presentation of the
workshop by the title "Success Stories of Punjab
Tanneries" was shared with the participants by Mr. Azher
Uddin Khan, Managing Director, National Environmental
Consulting (Pvt.) Ltd.
After the presentation, an exercise form was given to the
participants to have their views regarding the benefits of
CP options and to priorities the implementation of the
same. After the exercise the participants were recorded
their feedbacks about the workshop.
Mr. S.M. Naseem Director MIMA Industries awarded
certificates to the participants of the workshop.
After the distribution of certificate, vote of thanks was
given by Mr. Masood Ahmed Sheikh, Director, Khas (Pvt.)
Ltd.
Mr. Masood Ahmed Sheikh appreciated the efforts of CTP-KT
Project Team to organize this beneficial event for the
tanneries. He also appreciated the participants who
attended the workshop. Mr. Masood Ahmed Sheikh shared that
the tanneries located in Karachi have started working for
the environmental betterment.
In the end Mr. Ehsan Elahi, Director ALMA Leathers recite
the Darood-e- Ibrahimi and all the participants pray for
the successful execution of project activities.
