Cleaner Technologies in Leather Processing |
|
A four days workshop
titled “Cleaner Technologies in Leather Processing” was
organized for the tanneries connected to Environmental
Management Program (EMP) of PTA (SZ) Environmental
Society, in collaboration with “British Leather Centre” (BLC)
at National Institute of Leather Technology (NILT) during
December 9 to 12 2003.
All the presentations of the
workshop were made by Mr. Mark Lucas, Senior Leather
Technologist of BLC.
The objective of the workshop is
presented below.

Objective
1. To demonstrate the implementation
mechanism of cleaner production options.
Proceedings
The workshop was started with the recitation of Holy
Quran. After the recitation, opening remarks and
introduction of the sessions were given by Mr. Mark
Lucas.A manual having details of leather processing
was presented to the participants of the workshop.
A leaflet titled” Benefits of Cleaner Production
Options for Tanneries” was also presented to the
participants.
Objective of the workshop was communicated to the
participants by Mr. Rashid Ahmed Senior Leather
Technologist, Cleaner Technology Program for Korangi.

At day one’s sessions introduction of available
cleaner production technologies was given to the
participants and soaking process was also demonstrated.
Presentations on following were given on day one.
1. Environmental
Impacts of the Tanning Industries
2. Soaking
3. Skins
Three processes i.e. liming, unhairing and deliming were
demonstrated at day two. Presentations in this regard were
also made by the following titles.
1.
Liming & Unhairing
2.
Deliming
Practical demonstration of tanning and finishing processes
were shown to the participants at day three. Presentations
on following topics to clear the tanning and finishing
processes were given to participants.
1.
Pickling
2.
Tanning
Though the participants were frequently asking the
questions during the sessions regarding the demonstrated
CP techniques, but a session was specially held at the day
fourth to further clarify the ambiguities of the
participants. At the end of workshop certificates were
distributed among the participants from BLC.
The participants demonstrated their interest for the
implementation of cleaner production options in their
tanneries. The participant also shown their interest
towards attending these types of workshop in the
future.
The workshop was ended with the vote of thanks by Mian
Ahsan Elahi, President PTA (SZ).
